Edmund Briggs is a man down on his luck. Jobless with no prospects he has just lost his last few pounds on a horse race.
One day whilst looking through his mail he finds an envelope addressed to himself and marked 'private'. The letter contains a man's name, a photograph and the words, "WHEN THIS MAN DIES YOU WILL RECEIVE £2000"
He thought at first it was a prank, but a week later a small parcel arrives containing a short note and £2000.
The note simply said, "THANK YOU".
He was overjoyed at his legacy.
It was several days later that the second letter arrived ...
